A Stitch Upon the Thread!

Writer's picture: Marie-Therese DawesMarie-Therese Dawes

Last week I started a new project, to run alongside other work, called A Twitch Upon a Thread.

It is a year-long project in response to The National Gallery’s Saint Francis of Assisi Exhibition (Summer 2023) and an extension of my work within The dollHouse.

The fabric is a vintage towel roll I found at The Cloth House, selected because it fit on the towel roll from my Grandmother’s House. My use of domestic textiles is in part inspired by this object and the history of the women of my family it represents.

The words are the beginning of the Cantico di Frate Sole (Canticle of the Sun) by Saint Francis, a man who preferred a simple life, a theodidact.

My proposal is to stitch each day – a form of meditation – starting with this prayer. I want to explore themes of prayer and meditation and my own relationship with them and my practice.

I appreciate that this project will not be for everyone, I am approaching it from a secular position (if that’s not an oxymoron!) – starting at Fountains Abbey, Yorkshire while sitting outside a window listening to the Saint Bernard’s Day Service.

My first theme for meditation is patience - I already have made mistakes in the work - so the lesson to not strive for perfection is stitched into practice!

I have decided to see where the project takes me, to vary how, why, when and what I stitch in response to the process.

Please feel free to message me if you have any suggestions or comments.

Best Wishes

Marie-Therese
