My maternal Great Great Grandmother, a young widow, set up her textile factory in France, close to the battled fields of Ypres, manufacturing such fabrics for domestic use, particularly linens and lace. I have worked most of my adult life in hospitality, as the landlady of public houses providing a strange performative parody of the domestic role of wife/mother while polishing glasses with such cloth. There is in all public houses a magical point, a threshold between the domestic and public, check your appearance in the mirror, step past it, and you are transported to the front of house, and then the myth-making begins.
